Don't worry folks, free coupons for salad dressing are on their way...

I have been working at an extraordinary rate lately. I don;t blink about waking before 5am and working until after 8pm. But it is a tough, resulsts driven place, so I need to do well when I'm up at bat. Tomorrow I work from 4am on, then travel to LA for a UCLA recruiting event, then leave LA at 6am to get back to to oakland in time for a 9am meeting and a day that will last long past sundown.

Now I understand what that paycheck was for.

And I am above all tired
but just beneath that
I am pleased
And positively looking forward
hesitant
yet ever so thankful

It is hard not to see, when one allows oneself to interact with the simultaneous and grander you, that a ripple on still water carries more mystery than the stress you hold within. So let it go....

a man on the move [Aug. 26th, 2008|01:30 am]
After being in town for 1 whole day, I got to go to the DMV. Tomorrow morning, I am moving from Sac to SF, to my enormously intimidating but beautiful new diggs.

When I was at the DMV changing my address and renewing my registration, the girls behind the counter flipped out when they saw my new address. "Lombard Street! I know that! That's the crooked street, right?" And then like 3 DMV girls came over and were excitedly asking me questions about SF and what I did and DID I HAVE A GIRLFRIEND and other odd things.

Strange, what a street address can do to people. Personally, I don't care about the street. I just love the view and the fact that it has a garage and laundry and a bit of outdoor space, and I can walk to anything I need. Oh, and I get to take a cable car home from work; and I have a 5 burner gas range and a formal dining room. And I can look out and watch the traffic on the crooked street while i pee!

Actually, I love probably everything about it. I can hardly wait.

I want to post a copy of the prayer I laid at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, but I don't know if I should. Those things are supposed to be secret.

In closing, I would sign up for Twitter, but it sounds a bit too much like "tweaker."

on a related note...

What is the WORST food you have ever eaten?

Mine is, without question, pickled hard-boiled quail egg. Ever since I tried this food in 4th grade it has been the absolute worst thing I've ever put in my mouth.

What is your favorite nut? How do you like it? Salted? Honeyed? How?

My preference is unsalted roasted almonds.

For purposes of this survey, peanuts, which are technically a legume, may count as a nut.

Back in the Sac [Jul. 14th, 2008|02:29 am]
I'm back in Sacramento after a weekend of escaping the devastating heat (108) and choking smoke (from 2 nearby huge wildfires). I spent the weekend apartment hunting in San Francisco. I didn't expect to find anything on my first foray, and I have plenty of time to move. However, I found two absolute gems and I am putting down a deposit on one of them tomorrow.

My two choices are:
-A romantic 1870 standalone Victorian cottage in Pacific Heights, just a few feet off the best block of Fillmore street. It's a little cottage, and one of the oldest buildings in the city. It has survived 1906 and 1989 and settled into its quirky perch. The walls are original and show their age with a charm that makes you love the cracks. It really does feel like a romantic French country house in the middle of the city. It's the most unique property I have ever seen, including the ill-fated hobbit house of Bel Air which some of you may remember. But it's so rustic... it might be too rustic. The heat comes from a cast iron wood stove in the living room.

Or....

-A remodeled Edwardian on Lombard St. in North Beach. This place is 3 blocks from Coit Tower, 1 block from Joe Dimaggio park, and 2 blocks from Columbus Avenue, the heart of the North Beach neighborhood. I could take a cable car and the train to work everyday. It's dressed to the absolute nines, with a Bosch 5 burner range and silent dishwasher, stainless steel fridge and hardwoods, and a formal dining room. Oh, it also has stunning views of the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral and the TransAmerica Pyramid from the front; a view of the crooked part of Lombard (The "crookedest street in the world" which is actually not even the crookedest street in the city!) dead-on from the bathroom window. From the back porch it has a view of Alcatraz and the bay, and the afternoon light is amazing. I could walk to all the north beach restaurants, Chinatown, the Embarcadero, The Financial District, and Fisherman's wharf from the apartment. I've never seen a rental with so many amenities... 2 patios, a washer/dryer in unit, and 2 garage parking spots in the toughest neighborhood to park in the whole city. However, it is considerably more expensive. I could afford it, but I wouldn't save much. Though it seems fated to be mine. One of the three units in the building (mine would be the top floor unit of 3)is rented by someone with my exact same last name. If you know it, you may also know that very few people on earth have my name, and we all came from the same town in Ireland, so it is most assuredly a relative of mine of some sort. I think I'm going to take the plunge and spend the money in North Beach. And then I won't have to move until mid-august.

By the way, remember back when we used to have to find apartments without the aid of Craigslist? That sucked. I don't see how anything like this gets done without CL. It's like the internet of internets.

My, how it was nice to be back in San Francisco after those two aborted years in Los Angeles. The bay area is my home, and I've felt that way as long as I can remember. I'm never more comfortable and never more blessed than when I can see the rippling sunlight on the water, hear the church bells, and glimpse the full moon through wisps of fog on a crisp evening. My soul delights at the mere promise of returning home, and more so now than ever, because I can finally afford a beautiful home in the heart of the city. I'm thankful for everyone and everything that helped me get to this point. Bless you all.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but can McCain run for Obama's VP slot?

His speech today was very smart. He staked out a different (very anti-Bush) approach on nuclear proliferation. And he has been harshly critical of the Bush Administration's stonewalling about environmental issues. I strongly disagree with his policies on abortion and taxation and most social issues, but it wouldn't be the worst tragedy in the world if he were elected.

That said, I am a strong Obama supporter... I just believe that McCain is also qualified and reasonable, and would do better than Bush. But frankly, now that I think about it, that's doesn't mean McCain is any good... it just means Bush is so awful that ANYBODY could do a better job. I heard today that the squalid wretch has a 71% DIS-approval rating. Unheard of...

However, seriously, who are the 29% that approve of his job performance? Maybe it's the Cali-Factor, but I haven't met a single one.

Now that Edwards has finally endorsed, can we put away this BS about the Obama-Clinton ticket?
Wouldn't an Obama-Edwards ticket be better??

I am much more conservative than Edwards. I believe he is too protectionist and too much of a "big government liberal" to be a great president. However, he is a wonderful messenger, and I aprreciate the heartfelt compassion with which he approaches issues.

Sugar has now unofficially become officially adopted by me. I will soon take her to the vet and get any ailments she may suffer healed. She's been hanging out with me and following me around since February. When I leave LA in June, she will likely come with me.

Tonight, she showed extreme aggression and protection skills in the backyard. She and I were hanging out there tonight in the dark, and all of a sudden, her back bowed up. She raised her tail and looked to the northwest corner of the yard. She hissed and shot into the dark, only to return moments later with a mouse in its final throes. She nailed it with a vengeance. She's outside playing with it now. It was good to see her hunt with true fury and anger. It shows she has a territorial feeling about our shared space. She is now willing to fight my landlady's cat, Mau, in order to get into my apartment. Before, she just got into staring contests with my landlady's cat and old dog, but now she's starting to risk running the gauntlet of enemies to reach my door.

We are starting to have a routine. She comes in in mid-afternoon and eats. Then we play with the cat toys I bought her, and I give her catnip. Then I play on the computer. Then she comes and sits on my lap and then we go outside or she follows me anywhere else.

Looks like another bad day at the polls for my candidate. My prediction:

Clinton by 11 points in Indiana, Obama by only 4 in South Carolina.

Get out, Hilary.

Sorry My LJ cut feature is flunked up. Here are pictures of the silly cat I'm kind of adopting... as in it has decided to hang out with me every night. It's cute. I call it Sugar.
